At some point in kitchen history, soup plates began to be in service for only the most formal meals. Soup bowls became more useful for breakfast cereals. What remains is the convenient soup mug.

They are available in all sizes. From 6 ounces up to 10 or 12 ounces for the really big soup appetite. Soup mugs fit comfortably into the dinnerware arrangement whenever soup is accompanied by a fresh green salad or one of those mile high sandwiches. These mugs are available in French white styles or colors, with designs that suit a happy eater’s mood.

The Convenience Of Mugs For Soup
Soups that are thick and substantial like minestrone, beef and barley with rice or chowders need a sturdy mug to make the food presentation perfect. There’s one other often unnoticed feature of these mugs. They keep the soup hot, unlike soup bowls or plates that cool soup too quickly. Most are manufactured from ceramic materials with thermo glazing to insure that contents remain hot. Though they may be a bit bulkier in weight, the beauty of this feature is that it is less prone to tipping as with a soup bowl or soup plate. Some mugs also have a curved handle on the side for better balance and for handling purposes.

A Kitchen Without A Soup Mug?
Soup mugs can be hung from free-standing racks or from large cup holders that attach to a metal bar. This makes them always within reach when soup is served. A kitchen without a few of these mugs is only half as functional. It’s fun to sit down to a hot mug of chicken noodle soup or a tomato bisque with rice or crabmeat on a cold winter day. For that matter, it’s also nice to enjoy a refreshing mug of cold cucumber, potato leek or one of those melon or berry fruit soups that can cool off a hot and hungry family. In a mug, the soup remains cool thanks to the thermal kiln baking of the mug materials.

Soup’s On
One convenient thing about soup mugs is that when they are part of the luncheon or dinner meal, it’s a simple step to go from the soup pot with a soup ladle to the mug. No muss or fuss at all. Some mugs come in sets that are sold with a small platter. The mug fits into a side section and there’s room left for salad or a sandwich to accompany the soup.

Other Uses For Soup Mugs
Check the manufacturer’s manual before using mugs like these for baking purposes. This is especially important for French Onion soup that is usually baked with a cheese and crouton topping for up to 5 minutes. Chili and baked macaroni are two items that do well when served in these mugs. They can also be used to serve puddings. If they are heat-proof, try making baked French toast in them or a melty Brie cheese souffle in the soup mug.

Are you a modern day explorer? Are you passionate about wildlife? Do you feel a connection with the world of nature?

Many of us feel the same longing for freedom and adventure that spurred our forefathers (and foremothers) to push forward through the wilderness to experience new sights and new places. That feeling of discovery and exploration is still with us today. We often long for the peace and freedom of the great outdoors. We still yearn for a simpler, less complicated and less hectic time. This is apparent through the vast natural resources and wonders that have such importance in this great land called America. We have many opportunities available to us for the peace, relaxation and serenity that the modern day explorer looks for and craves. Whether you enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, hiking or a quiet picnic away from the noise of modern life, there’s a place to go, probably close to where you live. With our wonderful network of national, state and local parks and preserves, there is ample space for exploring American nature and wildlife. We really can “get away from it all” and be modern day adventurers.

It is now possible to keep that sense of exploration and adventure alive in our own homes. That is exactly what the products from American Expedition achieve. When you think of an expedition, you think of adventure, the forest and, of course, wildlife. You’ll find this is what is depicted in an American Expedition Soup Mug and Plate set. Whatever makes your “away” time special for you. Whether you’re an avid fisherman, hunter, weekend adventurer or someone who enjoys a good hike in the woods, you’ll love the superb craftsmanship that goes into the making of this fine collection. The exquisite attention to detail that goes into each piece is apparent to anyone with an eye for wildlife and the realistic colors will remind you of your favorite outing every time you use the set.

The spirit of adventure is alive and apparent in each piece of an American Expedition Soup Mug and Plate Set. The pheasant on the Birds of the Field Collage soup mug and plate set looks set to fly away and you can almost feel the movement of the trout on the American Expedition Fish Collage Soup Mug and Plate Set. The avid waterfowl hunter or enthusiast will enjoy the reminder of the quiet peacefulness of an early morning by a lake or stream depicted in the Waterfowl Collage set. The wildlife is done with such complete detail that you will often notice new aspects of the artwork.

Although these sets are extremely decorative, don’t be tempted to tuck them away somewhere, just for show. They are extremely well made, durable, functional and designed for everyday use. The fine craftsmanship as well as fine detail will give years of use and pleasure.

The American Expedition Soup Mug Plate Set comes boxed, ready for gift-giving and includes information about the wildlife shown on the set.

A set of soup mugs is a nice thing to have if you work outside the home and need something on the go without having to stop to use the microwave. Tomato soup or chicken soup can be drank right from the lid, and it will keep your soup warm for hours.

Stainless steel with glass insulation is the best way to go. Stanley makes these at affordable prices, which can be bought at Walmart or the sporting goods section at Sears. Try not to drop these, as the glass will break and your food won’t stay warm as long. They also complement camping sets very well, if you don’t plan to do a lot of cooking outside this summer. You can also buy plastic sets, but these don’t retain their heat as well and can break easily. The nice thing about soup mugs, too, is portability. You can take them anywhere without getting out your bowl and your spoon. These kinds of items are popular with the Boyscouts, and with summer camps. With some of the heartier soups made today like Campbells Chunky, you can often get an entire meal out of your soup mug. Just heat it up on the stove or in the microwave before pouring it into your thermos, and you’re good to go. If you plan on doing any extended hiking, like the Appalachian Trail, this is an item that makes all kinds of sense to take with you, very practical.

You can also buy traditional soup mugs for at home, such as stoneware or metal soup mugs for dinner. These are often restaurant quality, and will give you a healthy serving size to go with your sandwich or main course. If you go to a typical American diner and or clam chowder or any other kind of soup, it is generally served in a quality stoneware soup mug. These are good to have. Of course, you can get ceramic soup mugs, stainless steel, or plastic, ranging in price from twenty dollars to over one hundred dollars. Nordic Ware makes an affordable soup mug for just six dollars and ninety-nine cents.

For restaurant grade soup mugs, try www.wasserstrom.com. They sell durable mugs for coffee or soup for around sixty dollars. Most diners that bring you a pitcher of coffee will also serve the same large mugs that are used to serve soup, which is nice for serving breakfast. If you own a restaurant or are planning on going into the food service business, you will need to buy a set or several sets of these kinds of soup mugs. They are great for serving lunch, when many menus offer a cup of soup instead of a bowl to go with the sandwich or other lunch menu items. The best soup mug that I found for restaurant grade was the Diversified Ceramics mug, for around one hundred and forty-six dollars. If you have a big enough budget to invest in some fine furnishings for your restaurant or diner, I would recommend these for your line of lunch wares.

One day, I received an invitation to my friends Tupperware party. Feeling obligated to go and then to actually buy something while there, I browsed through the catalog looking for something that I thought I might actually be able to use that I didn't already own.

That’s when I stumbled upon the Tupperware Soup Mug. It is a soup mug (5.7 x 4.9 x 3.4 inches) that goes from refrigerator to microwave to table. Its volume is rated at sixteen ounces. The item comes in a variety of colors; Orange, smokey grey, aqua, lime green, clear and pink. They retail for around $15.00 and if you’re interested in purchasing one check with your local tupperware supplier or look on Amazon.com. So I decided to give it a try.

When I received the item, I was impressed at the quality item I had received. As expected with Tupperware, it was a nice thick plastic and the lid fit perfectly. The product claims to form a hermetic seal when closed, and so far that has held true for me. I’ve never once seen anything leak from mine. The product also has a fill to line clearly labeled inside, so everyone, including the smallest children or the elderly can easily and clearly see how high to fill the bowl without having to worry about it overflowing. It has a vented seal that allows hot air to escape while being microwaved, but since it’s vented, only steam can escape; nothing else can boil or bubble or pop out and create a mess of splatters in the microwave. It has a handle that stays cool and won’t heat up so when your food is heated as hot as you want it, the bowl handle won’t burn any fingers while trying to get it out of the microwave. Again, this is great especially for children. And best of all, it’s dishwasher safe, so when I’m done, I can throw it in the dishwasher.

This item has really made my life so helpful. I can now throw my leftovers from dinner in one of these mugs, and then when I’m ready to eat it, I just pop it in the microwave. I can put food in the cup and then when my child is ready to eat, he can easily heat it up himself without fear of him making a mess or burning himself on a hot bowl. We can put lunch in a bowl, and since the bowl won’t leak or break, I have no concerns having it roll around in a lunch bag, box or purse. And we can also make hot chocolate in the microwave without worrying about burning our fingers on hot ceramic mugs . This product truly is wonderful, unique and has so many uses.

Also, as with all Tupperware products, it comes with Tupperwares lifetime warranty against chipping, cracking, breaking, and peeling. If any of these things should happen to your soup mug, just contact Tupperware Customer Care toll-free at 1(800) 366-3800 for free replacement or if the item is unavailable, credit towards a future purchase.

Soup mugs were manufactured and sold as early as 1892. The idea of the handled extra large size cup for soup was a popular item then and remains so to this day.

The soup mug with dish is usually sold with an enclosure for the mug when set down on the dish. The dish made for the soup mug has a rounded partition usually on the side of the dish to fit the mug. The rest of the dish can hold food items. The cleverness of the soup mug and dish must have been thought from someone invited to parties that served foods and soups in buffet fashion. With a soup mug and dish set, the guest could fill his cup with soup, take a sandwich and probably eat standing up, if there were no places left to sit down, without much difficulty.

Convenience and thoughtfulness for one’s guests was a Victorian tradition that in some ways broke with traditional etiquette of the two handled soup bowl set on its own dish. The need for a sit down place setting and each place setting being removed before a new course could be served made the traditional two handled soup bowls clumsy when trying to feed people from a serving table where they could help themselves. The one handled soup mug with its own indented plate was an ingenious idea and might have led to other serving chinaware inventions like the Lazy Susan.

Soup mug and dish sets are easily found in antique stores and there are modern counterparts being sold in most places that offer products for parties and casual or even formal dining. These soup mugs and dish sets can be found in china or decorative glass or even in heavy, heat resistant plastic. The high end of soup mugs and dish sets can be as expensive as fine bone china or turn of the century decorative glass made in place like West Virginia. The fact that specially made soup mugs and plate sets come in different materials merely adds to their properly being used in either formal or casual dining.

For formal buffets, fine china or expensive decorative glass soup mugs and dish sets makes serving soup and accompaniments simple. For casual dining, inexpensive heat resistant plastics made into soup mugs and dish sets makes serving guests or letting guests serve themselves an easy chore especially when eating out of doors. The soup mug and plate set idea was not only ingenious in assisting guests to enjoy the food being proffered but also ingenious when it came to cleaning up and needing only to clean one plate instead of two per guest served soup and solid food items.

Novelty items like Campbell’s soup mugs and dishes add color and a motiff to place settings for parties and for casual use. These specialty soup mugs and dish sets can sometimes be collected and saved as antiques. Of course, for the most part, shopping for soup mugs and dish sets can be interesting if one goes to specific sites of manufacturers who make soups, Campbell being only one of them.
